Women’s Day Special : The Story of First Indian Woman to scale Mt.Everest

On a mountain based at an elevation of 8848m(29092 feet) where even the Oxygen cant reach, a Woman from India hoisted the Indian Flag in 1984.
Yes, the name of that wonder woman was Bachendri Pal.
It was 1984 when Bachendri Pal became the First Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest summit in the world.
Today, on this amazing occasion of International Women’s Day, we look into the deep insights of her life and what made her take this challenge.

How it all started..

Bachendri Pal was born on 24th of May in 1954 in a village in the Himalayas named Nakuri. It was based in Uttarkashi which is now Uttarakhand, a state in Northern India.
She was born to Hansa Devi and Shri Kishan Singh as one of their seven children. Her father was a border tradesman who supplied groceries from India to Tibet. She was born only five days before the first anniversary of the original ascension of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary.
Her first taste of mountaineering was when went out on a picnic with her friends and climbed 13123 ft at the age of 12.
Later, she got more of that experience during her course at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering when she scaled Mt. Gangotri (21,900 ft) and Mt. Rudragaria (19,091 ft).

The time was here..

In 1984, India scheduled its fourth expedition called Everest’84 to Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. Bachendri Pal was selected as one of the members of a group of 6 Indian woman and 11 Indian men.
They were then flown to Kathmandu, capital of Nepal in March 1984. As said by her, seeing the Everest generated a Devotional feeling in her as she was seeing this spectacular creation of Nature. They commenced their ascent in May 1984. It was all going well when the team faced an unexpected disaster. It was because of an avalanche that hit their tents at midnight because of which more than half the group abandoned the ascent.

Never lose hope…..

On 22nd of May 1984, the group resumed its ascent but Bachendri then was the only woman in the group. They reached a height of 26000 ft and set up their camps and spent the night there. They again started their ascent on 23rd May climbing the vertical sheets of ice with the cold winds blowing at a speed of 100km/h and temperatures were minus 30 to 40 degrees Celsius.
On 23rd of May 1984, at 1:07 PM IST, Bachendri Pal created History by becoming the First Indian Woman to climb Mount Everest. She achieved this feat on the day before her 30th birthday, and six days before the 31st anniversary of the first ascension to Mount Everest.

This is Success, someone has rightly said: “ Give woman the wings and they’ll fly higher than you can ever think of”. This is what happened, Bachendri Pal faced a lot of criticism from the society, but once decided, she didn’t stop.
We believe Women of today need this , they just need their freedom and they can do things we Men might never be able to think of.
